Busy week

Monday, September 18, 2006
Yes, it will be a busy week after a fairly busy weekend and, of course, the always busy Monday.

Right now, I am in the process of writing an article for The Creightonian (Creighton newspaper) about the genocide in Darfur. My trip to Des Moines for the Save Darfur rally yesterday afternoon was good. I hope the video footage I took turns out well for the film I am making for my Interpreting Texts class final project. I have a lot of things for school that I should be focusing on instead of this article or the film that doesn't need to be done until December, but it is hard for me to focus on those things when I remember that people are dying everyday in Darfur. When I think about it that way, does studying for an Organic Chem exam really matter all that much? THINK ABOUT IT. SAVE DARFUR. Visit savedarfur.org

I'm in an unusually good mood because I just finished watching Almost Famous, one of my favorite movies ever. I am always sad at the end just because the movie is over. But here I am, still in a good mood and listening to the soundtrack.

"Looking on she sings the songs
The words she knows, the tune she hums."

My day, in all honesty, wasn't really that good up until after class. Practice was alright. The novice seem like they will do just fine after some refinement, but we'll see after tomorrow since they will finally be rowing on the water in the morning. I think I sufficiently scared them, but in a good way, I hope.

"Oh, how it feels so real
Lying here with no one near
Only you, and you can hear me
When I say softly, slowly

Hold me closer, tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
You had a busy day today."

I think I am finally getting over being homesick...it wasn't a feeling that pervaded the last two weeks or so, but it was certainly there, under the surface, in everything I did. Every time I saw a green Jeep Wrangler, my thoughts always went to Ben. Or a black Beetle, to Lara. Using my little Pinehurst golf ball lip balm always gave me a twinge of missing home. I was so happy whenever I had an excuse to call or text Ben, Paul, or Lara...especially when I actually got to talk to them, even if I wasn't sober in the least. Despite that, I am still ridiculously excited to go home for Fall Break, and now for Thanksgiving since I booked my flight back two nights ago. I am scheduled to fly out of Omaha on Friday the 13th (woo, scary!) after classes, but I'm planning on call Frontier a couple days before I leave and try to get them to waive the fee and let me go standby on Thursday since I don't have anything huge going on in class and really want to have an extra day at home. I don't get to spend the entire week there since we have to be back for practice on Thursday morning, but it should be fun anyway. At least I hope so.

My parents will be in town in two weeks for Family Weekend. They've always come in for this weekend, but never for the actual Family Weekend events, but instead because we are usually racing in Des Moines. We won't be this year, so it should be interesting to spend the entire weekend with them.

The weekend after that we will be in Oklahoma City for our first regatta of the season. I am really excited because I've always enjoyed this regatta, especially since it was my first ever regatta. And it is always a lot of fun. I am incredibly nervous about what the boat lineups will be, but I can't spend my time worrying about that. I would like to lose weight before the season starts, but I know that will be difficult to do since I'm not allowed to run and there's only so much biking will do. Hopefully Jen will be able to come up with something that will help. We'll see. I'm already ready to be done with the novice so we can get back to preparing the Varsity boats. I'll have to work on my patience a little bit, especially for tomorrow and the novice rowers' first day on the water. I'm honestly a little nervous about it because I am certainly not known for having excess patience with anyone.

I will be buying Barenaked Ladies tickets on Saturday morning for their show at the Qwest Center in November. I am super excited for the show because after 10 years or so of being a BNL fan, I will finally be able to see them live. I wish I was going to be in town the Sunday after Thanksgiving because Panic! At the Disco and Jack's Mannequin (they had a freaking awesome show with O.A.R. in Denver in July) are playing at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs and I would like to go, but I will still be in Denver. Oh well.

And now it's time to get some homework done - Orgo and some English & American Lit reading.
